The study of mathematics is mandatory from Kindergarten to Year 10.
Mathematics is best learned in an atmosphere of enquiry and investigation. The Mathematics program at our school provides children with experiences which encourage investigation designed to develop mathematical concepts. Students are encouraged to participate in many practical hands-on activities using concrete materials.
The Mathematics program involves four strands:
Number and Algebra
Measurement and Geometry
Data and Statistics
Targeting Early Numeracy
All Stage 1 teachers have been trained in the Targeting Early Numeracy Program (TEN). It is an early numeracy program targeting students in Kindergarten to Year 2. The TEN Program model includes the use of:
• Strategically targeted activities focusing on early arithmetical strategies
• Explicit and systematic teaching
• Five-weekly monitoring of student progress to identify and plan future instruction.
Taking Off With Numeracy (TOWN)
All Stage 2 and 3 teaches have been trained in the Taking Off With Numeracy Program(TOWN). TOWN is a whole-class intervention initiative which focuses on improving numeracy skills of students in the upper primary years. Teachers assess each student's current numeracy understanding and to monitor student progress against a research-based framework. The program provides explicit guidance in designing whole class teaching programs to further develop each student's numeracy understanding. Emphasis is given to the teaching sequence related to developing Place Value, as it underpins the four operations and decimals, as well as important concepts in measurement. Focus is also given to the teaching of Multiplication and Division concepts.
